Data Migration

Organizations migrate to other forms of similar technologies when there is an acceptable level of synchronization between their requirements and the newer product, and when the newer product offers a superior value proposition.

It has been observed that many-a-times, companies and developers opt for high-end and high-cost solutions due to the absence of a viable, appropriate, and low-cost alternatives. It makes perfect sense for such companies and developers to migrate to viable alternatives as and when these alternatives become available.

Talking specifically about databases for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s), the investment in their existing database infrastructure is a major cause for concern. It is also a sufficient reason for them to migrate to a more suitable database. The sole impediment is the lack of databases targeted at the SME market and databases that lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

As an example, enterprise databases are often used in applications that do not require such high-end tools. Moreover, in the use of enterprise databases, organizations face impediments, such as high maintenance, licensing, and support-costs. However, due to the absence of low-cost and viable alternatives, these organizations are left with no choice but to carry on using enterprise software.

No doubt, there are some concerns associated with migrating to a new environment. The advantages of migrating to the best-suited environment predominantly overcomes both the concerns and the resistance to change.
